At this point in the season, there is quite a gap in points, even among the Top 10. But there are still some players whose scores are tied. We figured you might be wondering how it all works, so today we want to take a closer look and break it all down.
How does the system determine who gets ranked first if points are tied with another player?
In the case of a tie, the system uses a double-tie-breaker. Whoever received points last (newest recording) is the player who moves up in rank compared to the player they are tied with. This rewards players for actively competing in tournaments. Now let's say two players are tied in points and also just participated in the same tournament: Assuming both players didn't finish Top 3 in the tournament that day, their points would be updated at the exact same time, and their points would remain tied. In that case, the secondary tiebreaker is used, which is based on Player ID — rewarding the longer time player by moving him/her up to the higher Ranking.
Let's take a look at which Promo cards have been distributed so far this year:
JANUARY 2019 Promo:
Conquered Landscape
Type: Symmetry
Edition: Promo
Artist: J.L.Lockwood
Set: Converging Chasms
"Conquered Landscape" was the brand-new Promo for the month of January from Set 4. Converging Chasms didn't bring a whole lot of support for the Order in general, but the support they did get was pretty solid. The flavor of the card's name and artwork fits perfectly with what it does. Imagine a landscape that was preoccupied by a Guild, only to be swept by the Order and their battle tactics. At the end of the battle, they peer out over the land they've conquered, and any remaining enemies (do you think they take hostages?) are forced to discard a resource of the Order's choosing.
FEBRUARY 2019 Promo:
Carter, Champion of Cardsmithing
Type: Symmetry
Edition: Promo
Artist: B.A. Miller
Set: Crystal Forge
"Carter, Champion of Cardsmithing" was the Promo card given out during February's tournaments. This was a re-release as the card was previously distributed during the 1st season of Organized Play. The decision was made to give out this card again because we kept hearing over and over from players that many people had traded or given their copies away and would've liked to receive it again. You asked, we listened. Clarification: This is not a reprint, only a re-distribution of the card. The character on it is illustrated in the likeness of a real player named Carter, who won the 2016 Booster Draft Championship. For the cost of just 1 Life Point, the effect lets each player search their graveyard and put a card back into their hand. Not only did we feel that this card was worth re-distributing due to popular demand, but also because we predict its competitive viability will greatly increase during the fast-approaching season 3 of Organized Play... The reason? You'll find clues in the Organized Play section of the Exodus TCG Official Magazine Issue #3 (Pre-Orders just opened today, by the way), which you can order here. But more on that later.
MARCH 2019 Promo:
Timeless Angel of Eternity
Type: Creature — Angel
Edition: Promo
Artist: Dallin Bifano
Set: Birth of Creation
For the first time ever, "Timeless Angel of Eternity" is available as a tournament Entry Promo! Previously obtainable only through a product package on the website, we thought we would celebrate Skyborn stealing the lead once again in Guild Wars by making it this month's Promo. Its Eternal Echo Ability sends it to your hand instead of the graveyard whenever this creature is destroyed by battle. Nab yours at a sanctioned tournament or draft by the end of the month!
What decks have been making the rounds at tournaments lately?
That is a question we will answer when we take a look at a few of the many different decks that we've seen at recent tournaments....in the next column! Till then, Drifters.
